Texas: Two Bills to Watch in 2009
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The Texas legislature will be considering two bills in 2009 that are
significant to homeschooling families. The first, House Bill 316,
sponsored by Rep. Richard Raymond, lowers the starting age of
compulsory school attendance--from age 6 to age 5. This expands the
state's control over your children by one additional year.
The second bill is House Bill 319, also introduced by Rep. Raymond.
The bill would exempt from jury duty anyone who has legal custody of a
child younger than 15 years of age, and whose service on a jury would
require leaving the child without adequate supervision.
At this time, HSLDA is not requesting that any action be taken on
these bills; we simply want you to know about them. We plan to oppose
H.B. 316 and support H.B. 319 and will be asking for your assistance
with this in the future, so please stay tuned for more information.
