Arizona--Marriage Amendment on November 4 Ballot!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The general election ballot on November 4, 2008, will include a very important proposed amendment to the Arizona Constitution. Voters will be asked to approve an amendment to the Arizona State Constitution to define marriage as only between one man and one woman.
Ballot Proposition 102 provides Arizona voters a second chance to pass the marriage amendment!
While Arizona does have a law that prohibits marriage between persons of the same sex, this statute could be changed, either by the legislature or by an Arizona court.
The text of Ballot Proposition 102, the marriage amendment, is:
1. Marriage SECTION 1. ONLY A UNION OF ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN SHALL BE VALID OR RECOGNIZED AS A MARRIAGE IN THIS STATE.
How does defining marriage as being between one man and one woman potentially affect your right to homeschool your children?
Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of Troxel v. Granville: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course."
Thus, parental rights are based on "Western civilization concepts of the family." When those concepts are no longer the legal definition of the family in this nation, then the foundation upon which parental rights are based is completely removed. Therefore, HSLDA will continue to fight against same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage attacks the traditions of the family in Western civilization. This is an attack on parental rights. This is a battle the homeschooling movement cannot afford to lose.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please vote "Yes" on Ballot Proposition 102 and approve the amendment to define marriage in Arizona as only between one man and one woman, and encourage others to do the same. It's important to every family.

Thank you in advance for your commitment to the protection of marriage in Arizona. Sincerely,

---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances...
Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
