====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 20, 2008 Ohio--Proposed Scholarship Excludes Homeschoolers From Eligibility Dear HSLDA Members: The Akron City Council unanimously passed an ordinance on October 6 spelling out the eligibility rules for Mayor Don Plusquellic's "scholarship for sewers" proposal. This is a proposal to lease Akron's sewer system in order to fund a scholarship for children in the city of Akron. The ordinance, which expands on the charter language for Issue 8 on the Nov. 4 ballot, says that residents attending Akron Public Schools, as well as private, nonprofit schools, are eligible for the scholarships. The ordinance also addresses the issue of homeschooled Akron students. To be eligible, a home-schooled student would have to attend an approved Akron high school from grades 9 through 12. ACTION REQUESTED Please visit http://akroncitycouncil.org/contact/contact.asp and request a change in the language of this ordinance, allowing homeschoolers to be eligible for the scholarship without attending an Akron high school. You can email a comment, send a letter, or call your councilperson. After stating that your comment is in regards to the "Akron Scholarship Plan Eligibility Policy," you can state, "I am a homeschool parent and I reside in the city of Akron. I feel that this ordinance discriminates against me and my students because homeschooled students are not eligible unless they attend and graduate from an approved Akron school. I am requesting that you change the language of the ordinance so that homeschooled students are eligible for the scholarship." If you have any questions please feel free to contact our staff at (540) 338-5600. Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
