====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== California: Reminder to File Your Private School Affidavit Between October 1-15 Dear HSLDA Members: California law requires all children who are not attending a public school to either be enrolled in a private school or to be taught by a certified teacher. In California, homeschoolers generally operate as private schools, and private schools are required to register annually between October 1 and 15 with the California Department of Education. This reminder does not apply to those homeschool families who are enrolled in a private school satellite program (a PSP or umbrella school, formerly called an "ISP"). If you are enrolled in this type of program, your PSP will file a private school affidavit on behalf all the families enrolled in their school, and you may ignore this reminder. This reminder is for the individual family who is not enrolled in a PSP and wants to homeschool by establishing a private school exemption in their home. The filing time is just around the corner, so write yourself a reminder and don't let the deadline get past your busy schedule. The private school affidavit is an electronic filing online at the California Department of Education's website. There is no fee involved. Please visit the California page of HSLDA's website (http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5532) where you will find a link to the CDE's website where the private school affidavit is located, as well as detailed instructions on how to complete the form. The CDE's website indicates that the affidavit will be posted online by October 1, so you will not be able to review it until that date. Once it is online and you've had a chance to review it, if you have questions that aren't answered by our instructions and need assistance, call the HSLDA legal department at (540) 338-5600. We will review the affidavit with you. One thing to keep in mind regarding naming your school: If you have high schoolers, remember your school name will appear on transcripts, diplomas, college applications, resumes and employment applications. We recommend selecting a name that isn't going to cause a future employer to question whether you have a valid high school diploma. Don't use your family's last name or call it a "homeschool." Once again, if you have trouble with the affidavit, don't hesitate to give us a call.
