Louisiana--Your Attendance Needed at Public Hearing!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The Lake Charles Fire and Police Civil Service Board will meet Friday, September 5, 2008, to discuss the minimum education requirements necessary to be hired. This meeting has the potential to affect privately educated students, including homeschool students.
The civil service board will hear comments on whether to broaden the current education requirements required for civil service applicants. The current requirement is that an applicant must "have a high school diploma or a valid certificate of equivalency issued by a state department of education."
The proposed amendments allows applicants to demonstrate through one of several ways that they have met the minimum high school graduation requirements necessary to receive a high school diploma as established by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The amendment would allow one of the following: high school diploma, high school transcript, certificate of equivalency, affidavit from the issuing high school, college diploma or college transcript.
Your presence in support of this amendment will help future homeschool students who apply for a civil service position. Instead of having to get a GED, they should be able to provide their transcripts, diploma and/or affidavit from their private homeschool. Please make plans to be there! ACTION SUGGESTED:
Please come to the Lake Charles Fire and Police Civil Service Board public hearing at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, September 5. The public hearing will be held in the City Council Chambers in the Lake Charles City Hall at 326 Pujo Street.
If you want to speak you should be able to sign up at the meeting. We suggest that you urge the board to approve the amendments. You can identify yourself as a parent who privately educates your children, and that alternative means of demonstrating the minimum high school graduation requirements should be supported.
BACKGROUND:
Through the hard work of a local attorney, Robin Williams, the State Civil Service Board revised the education requirement of the civil service exam. This was then sent out to all of the local civil service boards across the state for their approval.
CHEF of Louisiana and HSLDA are urging the support of these amendments, as they should remove some hurdles that private school students, and the occasional homeschool student, have faced when applying for civil service positions.
We understand that of the five members of the Lake Charles Fire and Police Civil Service Board, at least two of them have expressed opposition to these changes. Your attendance at this public hearing could have a big impact on whether this amendment is adopted or not. Please plan on attending.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney
---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind?
An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
