Mississippi--Certificate of Enrollment Reminder
Dear Mississippi Members:
For those of you planning to comply with Mississippi's home
instruction law for the 2008-2009 school year, we are providing the
following information by way of reminder.
A parent, guardian, or custodian of a child desiring to provide a home
instruction program must file a certificate of enrollment which
includes the names, address, and telephone number of parents and
children, dates of birth of children, and a "simple description of the
type of education the children are receiving." The certificate must be
submitted by September 15 of each school year to the school attendance
officer where the child resides.
Some school districts may attempt to require a curricular description
be included with the certificate of enrollment. A "simple description
of the type of education the children are receiving" does not include
a description of your child's curriculum. Rather, you may simply
indicate that you intend to provide a program of home instruction.
Please note that HSLDA will defend any member family whose right to
teach their children at home is challenged by the state--even if their
religious convictions prohibit them from complying with the state home
school law. The information in this email is provided to those who
intend to comply with state law and to assist you in meeting the
statutory deadline.
