District of Columbia--HSLDA Announces Release of Revised D.C. Legal Analysis
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
From attending school board meetings, to serving on committees, to writing letters and making phone calls--you have done your very best to influence policymakers to minimize their level of intrusion into the affairs of homeschooling families. Your efforts were instrumental in stopping what would have been the most severe and repressive homeschool regulation in the country. The original regulations included home visits and unprecedented intrusion into families' private matters, including medical records. The original regulation also allowed for unchecked bureaucratic discretion in determining when and how families were in compliance with D.C.'s compulsory school attendance law.
The final regulation approved by the school board would have benefitted from amendments proposed by HSLDA and homeschool leaders in the District. The end product is, however, much improved from the original proposal released in March this year. And as a result of this process, the District now has a more formal homeschooling organization to help coordinate homeschoolers' relations with District policymakers and in connecting District homeschoolers with each other.
HSLDA's legal analysis is provided to help you understand the new regulation. You can view the analysis online at http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?State=DC . HSLDA encourages all D.C. members to review the legal analysis and to contact HSLDA to discuss their individual situations. We remain committed to working with D.C. homeschool leaders and with District policymakers to improve the regulation. HSLDA also stands ready to assist its members with any concerns or disputes that arise over the interpretation and implementation of the new regulation.
Thank you for your support of homeschooling freedom!
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
