====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== July 31, 2008 Massachusetts--Legislature Moves Closer to Increasing Compulsory School Attendance Age Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Earlier this year we reported to you that Massachusetts lawmakers had introduced eight different bills to raise the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18 years. Senate Bill 2462 has now been replaced by Senate Bill 2766, which was passed by the Senate by a vote of 36-0. The bill is now in the House and is moving to its third reading. The new legislation would establish policies and programs to improve dropout prevention and graduation rates in Massachusetts. It also creates a commission to study, among other things, raising the compulsory school attendance age to age 18. The commission membership includes many appointees, most of whom are professional educators or representatives of teachers associations. As you know, it is the position of the NEA that children should be required to attend school until they graduate or reach age 21. If created, the commission would be required to report its findings to the legislature by December 31, 2009. HSLDA will continue to monitor this legislation and the commission, if created, to work to defeat any increase in the age of compulsory attendance in Massachusetts. Thank you for your support as we work to preserve homeschooling freedom in Massachusetts and throughout the world. Very truly yours, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
