Nebraska--Legislative Wrap-Up
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
The Nebraska Legislature has adjourned for the year. Throughout the Legislature's 2007-08 session, Home School Legal Defense Association tracked three bills that could affect homeschoolers, including Legislative Bill 1159, relating to truancy procedures, Legislative Bill 1141, relating to testing requirements for homeschoolers and Legislative Resolution 369, relating to an interim study of homeschooling. Portions of L.B. 1159 were merged into another law that was passed and signed by the governor but should not have an impact on homeschoolers.
L.B. 1141 was the subject of great debate and activity in this legislative session. Homeschoolers from all over Nebraska, led by organizations like NCHEA and others, demonstrated to the Nebraska Legislature that homeschoolers were unified in their position that there is no need to change homeschool regulations.
Legislative Resolution 369 received a priority to from the Legislature, meaning that the homeschool study would receive some support from the staff of the education committee. HSLDA has learned from the committee that a public hearing and written report are unlikely to result from the interim study. The vast amount of testimony from hundreds of homeschoolers and expert witnesses provides overwhelming evidence that homeschoolers in Nebraska do not see a need for change in the homeschool laws or regulations.
We are grateful for your vigilance and involvement to support parental rights and to keep homeschooling in Nebraska free from unreasonable governmental interference.
If you have questions regarding a particular homeschooling legislative issue, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
