District of Columbia--HSLDA Receives Word That Homeschool Regulations Were Removed from June 18 Meeting Agenda
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Good news! Last night, the executive director of the D.C. State Board of Education informed HSLDA that the vote on the homeschooling regulations has been removed from the June 18 meeting agenda. According to the director, substantial changes have been made to the regulations, so the comment period must be extended. This is a breakthrough, and we are thankful to have more time to influence the outcome of these regulations!
These changes have been made because you -- homeschoolers in D.C. and throughout the country -- are involved in this process. The SBOE and OSSE are paying attention to your calls, emails, and presence at their meetings -- and your comments have influenced them to revise the regulations yet again.
Thank you for all of your hard work and persistence! Yesterday I participated in the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU with D.C. State Superintendent of Education Deborah Gist, and D.C. SBOE District 2 Member Sekou Biddle. During the program, Mr. Biddle commented that he has received over 1,000 emails about this issue. You can listen to his comments, as well as the remainder of the interview online at http://wamu.org/programs/kn/08/06/12.php#20841
At this point, HSLDA is still working to obtain a copy of the most recent revisions to the regulation. We do not yet know when the additional comment period will begin and end, but we will keep you updated as we gather more information.
Thank you again!
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
