====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 15, 2008 New Hampshire--S.B. 337 Passed House with Carson Amendment, 188 to 168 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you to all who attended yesterday's rally against S.B. 337 at the State House! Unfortunately, S.B. 337 did pass the full House with the Carson Amendment (http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5133). However, it is clear that your representatives are listening to you because it passed by only 20 votes! Because the Senate passed a different version of S.B. 337, the bill will now return to the Senate for approval. If the Senate concurs with the changes, S.B. 337 will go to Governor John Lynch for approval. If the Senate disagrees with the changes, S.B. 337 will go to a conference committee where both House and Senate members will try to reach an agreement. If they cannot agree, S.B. 337 will die. Any changes agreed upon must be voted on by both the House and the Senate. Please note that Rep. Sharon Carson has been instrumental in fighting for homeschooling freedom throughout this process and wanted to vote "no" on S.B. 337. However, she had to vote for it (which carried her amendment) to be on the conference committee to ensure that no harmful changes are made in the future. At the risk of hurting her voting record, Rep. Carson has worked hard to implement strategies to lessen the bill's impact and make it easier to defeat. I encourage you to thank Rep. Carson for all her efforts. For more information on Senate Bill 337, see http://www.hslda.org/Legislation/State/nh/2008/NHSB337/default.asp We will continue to keep you updated as S.B. 337 returns to the Senate. Thank you for all your hard work--because of your perseverance, there is still hope that S.B. 337 will die! Very truly yours, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
