====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== California--Family Protection Ministries Urgently Needs Support Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: As you know, we at HSLDA have been very busy working on legal responses to the rehearing of the negative homeschool Appellate Court decision that became public on February 28. What you may not know is that since Feb. 28, Family Protection Ministries has been very busy leading the fight for us in the California Legislature to successfully stop several plans to introduce legislation this year that would have resulted in unacceptable and burdensome regulation of homeschooling. This present and ongoing battle is a direct result of the negative Appellate Court decision. Family Protection Ministries (FPM) is in critical need of increased financial support in order to continue their work now and through the summer. FPM is the only organization, with a full-time presence in Sacramento, dedicated to protecting the freedoms of private homeschooling in the California Legislature. HSLDA has worked very closely with Family Protection Ministries for more than 20 years to advance and protect your freedom in California to teach your children at home. Roy Hanson, Jim Davis, and Nathan Pierce of FPM are our eyes and ears and "troops on the ground" in Sacramento. Over the last several years, Family Protection Ministries has led the charge to defeat horrible bills, which would have significantly reduced your freedom. These include: > A state daytime curfew law; > An attempt to add "educational neglect" as a category for child abuse; > A bill that would have made mandatory mental health examinations for every Californian every three years; > A bill that would have required at-risk screening and intrusive homes visitations of newborn babies; > Bills in almost every session to lower the compulsory attendance to age 5 and introduce mandatory kindergarten; > A bill that would have made habitual truancy a new category of child abuse resulting in child protective services conducting truancy investigations; > A bill that would have mandated politically correct parenting education a graduation requirement in California. In teamwork with others, FPM is also providing leadership in the battle to defeat A.B. 2943, the new anti-spanking bill. A.B. 2943 replaced A.B. 755, which was defeated earlier this year--thanks to your calls and Family Protection Ministries' leadership. Additionally, FPM is monitoring thousands of bills and working behind the scenes on bills that could affect private homeschoolers. In dealing with the aftermath of the Appellate Court decision, FPM has incurred a huge increase in costs of printing, communications, and travel; plus an increase in part-time hourly help expenses necessary to deal properly with this situation. Roy, Jim, and Nathan have been working incredibly long hours into the evenings and on weekends just to handle all of the high priority tasks since Feb. 28 They are exhausted. They need one more full-time staff person. Until they are financially able to hire a new full-time staff person, they must at least have the resources to pay for more hours of part-time help just to survive. FPM must invest their resources and time in developing and maintaining important relationships with dozens of organizations, hundreds of families, and 120 legislative offices. Without FPM's past and current efforts, we would likely be facing several battles for our homeschool freedoms right now. God has used Roy Hanson's and Jim Davis's skillful expertise and experience along with their strategic legislative contacts, to equip them for this unique work of successfully preventing and eliminating dangerous legislation. The California Legislature is in session and our freedoms are at risk. We must have FPM's presence in Sacramento to protect our liberties! Family Protection Ministries is funded solely by tax-deductible donations from homeschool families in California. Without your support, Family Protection Ministries will not continue to exist. I am asking you to give sacrificially and generously today to ensure our continued freedom to homeschool in California. FPM needs both new regular monthly support and one-time gifts. For those of you who are already giving to FPM, I thank you and ask you to please consider giving an extra amount at this time. Please also consider forwarding this request onto other homeschoolers. Those who give $40 or more each calendar year will receive FPM's newsletter on a complimentary basis. Make your tax-deductible gift payable to FPM, and mail it today to: FPM P.O. Box 730 Lincoln, CA 95648-0730 Thank you for your consideration of FPM's urgent need as they work diligently to protect our freedoms.
