New Hampshire--Your Presence Made a Difference for Homeschool Freedom!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Thank you to everyone who attended Tuesday's hearing on S.B. 337--your presence made a difference!
Nearly 500 parents and children showed up in opposition to the bill that would institute a filing deadline and require first-time homeschoolers to submit a curriculum description prior to starting their homeschool program. More than 50 people signed up to testify, and not one member of the public spoke out in favor of S.B. 337!
The only government official who testified in favor of S.B. 337 was Roberta Tenney, who handles homeschooling issues for the N.H. Department of Education, and who has been collaborating with the bill's sponsor, Sen. Iris Estabrook. Ms. Tenney testified that the legislation's intent was to start a "dialog" with first-time homeschoolers and to encourage "collaboration" and "conversation." Ironically, neither Sen. Estabrook nor Ms. Tenney sought to improve the state's relationship with homeschoolers by discussing this bill with the Home Education Advisory Council (HEAC), a panel established by law and charged with facilitating effective communication with public officials and making recommendations to any changes in homeschooling regulations. In fact, the HEAC was not even aware of S.B. 337 until it was introduced in the Senate!
While their children listened or quietly completed assignments, a number of homeschooling parents articulately presented their reasons for opposing S.B. 337. Apparently, some committee members were listening intently--"We'll see what the committee thinks," commented Rep. Pamela Price. "I don't think it's necessary and hope my colleagues will recognize that." Rep. Sharon Carson echoed the sentiment: "After looking at this, I don't see the need for this law."
We are still waiting for the Education Committee's final verdict and will let you know as soon as the members have made a decision.
In the meantime, thank you again for your investment in homeschooling freedom. Without your efforts, defeat of S.B. 337 would not be possible!
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney

We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's National Center for Home Education is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
