Connecticut: Your Calls are Working--Please Continue!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Your calls are working! Senate Bill 162, which would compel parents to notify their local public school district of their intent to homeschool their children by certified mail, return receipt requested, has had an amendment offered which would restore the original language of the bill.
Amendment No. 4055 to Senate Bill 162, proposed by Senators Freedman and Debicella, would ensure that the bill only applies to parents withdrawing their children from public school. This was the original intent of the bill and has been the goal of homeschooling families since the bill was drastically altered in the Education Committee last month.
Since the bill has been calendared in the Senate, it can be called upon at any time for a vote. Once it is called upon, the Senate will also have to decide whether to vote for or against the proposed amendment. Your calls are needed TODAY to request their approval of this amendment!
ACTION REQUESTED:
1. Please call and write (both would be better) your state senator with this message:
"Please support amendment No. 4055 to Senate Bill 162 which restores the original intent of the bill and expands parental freedom while withdrawing children from public schools."
To find the name and contact information for you senator, please use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5034 .
To view the text of this bill, please visit: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5035 .
To view the language of the proposed Amendment, please visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5036 .
2. Please forward this email to other homeschooling families who are not members of HSLDA and ask them to contact their state senator with this message as well.
BACKGROUND:
If enacted, Senate Bill 162 would require all parents who choose to homeschool their children to comply with statutory notification procedures, regardless of whether they have previously been enrolled in the public school.
If this amendment is adopted by the Senate, the bill will only require parents withdrawing their children from public school to notify the local public school district of their intent to have them educated in accordance with Connecticut law.
Sincerely,
Dewitt T. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel
