Tennessee--Attend the THEA Capitol Hill Rally Day!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The Tennessee Home Education Association invites all home-educating families to the THEA Capitol Hill Rally Day taking place Tuesday, April 8, 2008, between 8:45 and 11:00 a.m. in the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. HSLDA's new video explaining the Parental Rights Amendment to the federal constitution will be shown. State legislators and outstanding homeschooled students from across the state will be honored for their contributions to the homeschool community. Additionally, the THEA Honor Band, featuring student musicians from across the state, will be showcasing their talent.
The danger of House Bill 2795, presented during the current legislative session, underscores how very important it is for as many homeschool families as possible to attend this event. This bill would have required all non-public school students, including homeschoolers, to take the same state tests required for public school students. The Tennessee General Assembly is still considering several bills which would affect homeschooling families. As we have seen, they could introduce legislation to further restrict homeschooling at any time.
In my 17 years at HSLDA, I have seen how effective capitol lobby days are in preventing bad legislation. A face-to-face meeting between a legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling. Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. If a legislator never meets a homeschooler, he may have no reason to support parental freedom to homeschool and may vote against homeschooling if presented with the issue.
In addition to protecting your freedom, the THEA Capitol Hill Rally Day provides a great opportunity to your children for a field trip to learn about state government and how laws are made in Tennessee.
Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event!
On the agenda: > The THEA Honor Band. > HSLDA's video presentation explaining the importance of the Parental Rights Amendment to the federal constitution. > Honoring outstanding homeschool student achievement by students across the state. > Special speakers, including the Junior and Senior first place winners of the Sara Lee Harris Worldview Oratory Contest.
Below are MORE reasons to attend the THEA Capitol Hill Rally Day: > Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement. > Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of homeschoolers within the state. > Spend one-on-one time with your legislator. > Show legislators that the homeschool movement is alive and well. > In this election year, let legislators know that homeschoolers participate in the political process by voting.

We hope you can come this year!
Sincerely,
Dewitt T. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel
