South Carolina--Attend the SCHEA Home School Day at the Capitol!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The South Carolina Home Educators Association invites all homeschooling families to the Home School Day at the Capitol taking place Thursday, April 10, 2008, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Columbia. You will have a chance to meet with your state senators and representatives as well as the opportunity to sit in on a legislative session. Several special workshops will be conducted, tours of the Capitol and Governor's Mansion are being arranged, two homeschool bands will be performing on the grounds of the Capitol... there's even a scavenger hunt! This event is free!
We at HSLDA believe it is very important for as many homeschool families as possible to attend this event. The South Carolina General Assembly is considering several bills which would affect homeschooling families. At any time, they could introduce legislation to further restrict homeschooling. Registration beings promptly at 9:00 a.m. in Room 101 of the Blatt Building.
In my 17 years at HSLDA, I have seen how effective capitol lobby days are in preventing bad legislation. A face-to-face meeting between a legislator and a homeschooling family gives the legislator the opportunity to see firsthand the positive benefits of homeschooling. Informed homeschooling constituents who meet with and demonstrate interest in their legislator's activities provide that legislator with reasons to vote in favor of maintaining homeschool freedom. If a legislator never meets a homeschooler, he may have no reason to support parental freedom to homeschool and may vote against homeschooling if presented with the issue.
In addition to protecting your freedom, the SCHEA Home School Day at the Capitol provides a great opportunity to your children for a field trip to learn about state government and how laws are made in South Carolina.
Plan ahead and make an appointment with your legislators. Take advantage of this opportunity. Don't miss this year's great event!
On the agenda: > "How to Get Involved in Government" presented by Orin Smith of the Palmetto Family Council > "Establishing Positive Ties with Your Legislator" presented by Lee Safley > "How to Get Involved with Political Campaigns and Count It as School" presented by Randy Page > The AAA Band under the directorship of Ms. Barb Rollins and the Midlands Band under the directorship of Mr. Jim Gill > Tours of the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion available (pre-registration is required for these tours) > The scavenger hunt will allow you to learn about the Capitol grounds while having fun!
Below are MORE reasons to attend the Home School Day at the Capitol: > Dispel any negative myths of the homeschool movement. > Give legislators an understanding of the large numbers of homeschoolers within the state. > Spend one-on-one time with your legislator. > Show legislators that the homeschool movement is alive and well. > In this election year, let legislators know that homeschoolers participate in the political process by voting.

We hope you can come this year!
Sincerely,
Dewitt T. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel
