====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 24, 2008 Connecticut: Calls Needed to Oppose Proposed Homeschool Statute Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls are needed to protect the present level of freedom to homeschool enjoyed in Connecticut. Senate Bill 162, as approved by the Committee on Education, would amend state law to compel parents to notify their local public school district of their intent to homeschool their children by certified mail, return receipt requested. Connecticut presently has no homeschool statute. Most parents conduct home instruction by complying with voluntary guidelines established by the State Board of Education. Action Requested: 1. Please call and write (both would be better) your state senator with this message: "Please oppose Senate Bill 162 as approved by the Committee on Education. This bill unnecessarily imposes state regulation on families providing a home education program for their children. Please vote to return the bill to the language as it was introduced to the Committee." To find the name and contact information for you senator, please use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4930 2. Please forward this email to other homeschooling families who are not members of HSLDA and ask them to contact their state senator with this message as well. Background: Prior to its amendment by the Committee on Education last week, the proposed bill would only have required parents withdrawing their children from public school to notify the local public school district of their intent to educate their children in accordance with Connecticut law. If enacted, Senate Bill 162 would require all parents who choose to homeschool their children to comply with statutory notification procedures, regardless of whether they have previously been enrolled in the public school. Once passed by the Committee on Education, the bill was filed with the Legislative Commissioner's Office where its official language will be drafted and it will be reviewed to ensure accuracy and harmony with current law. From there, it will be sent to the full Senate for a vote. Sincerely, Dewitt T.
