Nebraska--Governor Heineman Declares March 30-April 5 Nebraska Home Education Week!
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Governor Dave Heineman has issued a proclamation declaring March 30-April 5, 2008, Nebraska Home Education Week! In part, the proclamation states:
"WHEREAS, The State of Nebraska desires to promote excellence in education; and
"WHEREAS, Dozens of studies confirm that children who are educated at home score significantly above average on national achievement tests; and . . .
"WHEREAS, The State of Nebraska recognizes the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children; and
"WHEREAS, It is appropriate that home educators be recognized and commended for their dedication to excellence in education and for their significant and vital contributions to our society."

In other good news, L.B. 1141 is still sitting in the Education Committee. Though the committee can move the bill to the full legislature, they have not yet done so, probably due to the overwhelming response from you and other homeschooling families. However, it is unlikely that the committee will act on the bill, as no senator has made L.B. 1141 a priority, and right now, many other priority bills are fighting for the legislature's attention.
Thank you for your hard work and support of homeschooling in Nebraska. Your efforts have made the difference in the fight against L.B. 1141.
We will continue to keep you updated as necessary.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances...
Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
