Maryland--Call Immediately to Oppose Repeal of One-man, One-woman Marriage
Dear HSDLA Members and Friends: Calls are needed immediately to stop a bill that will twist marriage into something it was never intended to be: the joining of two people of the same gender. A hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday. Your calls can convince the delegates that Maryland wants to protect marriage as it has been known and honored from the beginning of time.
Maryland is one of the states that wisely chose to define marriage by law rather than wait for an activist judge to write his own definition--but now Delegate Benjamin Barnes wants to change that. House Bill 351 would repeal the definition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman and replace it with language permitting two people of the same gender to "marry."
The freedom to homeschool rests in part on the protection of marriage as between one man and one woman. Attacks on marriage also undermine your right to homeschool.
ACTION REQUESTED Please call members of the committee to express your opposition. If you live in the district represented by one of the delegates below, be sure to call that delegate. Use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find who your delegates are.
Your message can be as simple as:
"Please oppose House Bill No. 351. Marriage between one man and one woman is a foundation of our civilization. Altering this time-honored definition undermines the family and attacks parental rights." If your last name begins with the letters A through G, please call the delegates in the first group. If your name begins with H through M, please call the second group. If your name begins with N through S, call the third group. T through Z call the fourth group. This bill would affect all families, so it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS Group 1 Joseph F. Vallario, Jr., Chair (410) 841-3488 Samuel I. Rosenberg, Vice-Chair (410) 841-3297 Curtis Anderson (410) 841-3291 Benjamin Barnes (410) 841-3046 Jill Carter (410) 841-3283 Group 2 Frank Conaway (410) 841-3189 Kathleen Dumais (410) 841-3052 Don Dwyer (410) 841-3047 William Frank (410) 841-3793 Kevin Kelly (410) 841-3404 Benjamin Kramer (410) 841-3485 Group 3 Susan Lee (410) 841-3649 Gerron Levi (410) 841-3101 Susan McComas (410) 841-3272 Tony McConkey (410) 841-3406 Victor Ramirez (410) 841-3340 Todd Schuler (410) 841-3526 Group 4 Christopher Shank (410) 841-3636 Luiz Simmons (410) 841-3037 Michael Smigiel (410) 841-3555 Kriselda Valderrama (410) 841-3210 Jeffrey Waldstreicher (410) 841-3130
BACKGROUND
How does redefining marriage or creating civil unions (in effect same-gender marriage) affect your parental rights and your right to homeschool? Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of
Troxel v. Granville:
"Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family (a married couple of one man and one woman) as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course."
An attack on one-man, one-woman marriage is therefore an attack on the foundation of parental rights themselves. Although the proponents of this and similar measures will declare the purpose is to grant rights to individuals, the fruit will be the destruction of parental rights.
Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
Sincerely yours,
Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney
