Utah--Calls Needed to the Senate to Defend Parental Rights Today
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Historically, Utah has been a leader among the states in upholding parental rights and the traditional notion of the family. However, Senate Bill 186, currently being debated by the Senate, would turn over to the courts the ability to sanction any relationship a person has with a child and potentially allow non-parents to have "parenting time."
Currently, only biological/adoptive parents may obtain "parenting time" in the Utah Code, whereas non-parent relatives by blood or marriage may obtain "visitation." This bill reverses these laws and opens the door to any person being able to obtain not just visitation, but also "parenting time." ACTION REQUESTED
Please call or email members of the Utah Senate and in your own words, give the following message:
"Senate Bill 186 creates unnecessary changes to Utah law regarding custody, parenting time or visitation. The current system is not broken and does not need to be fixed. Please oppose Senate Bill 186."
It is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler, as this issue affects every family in Utah.
To find your senator, you can use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . You can also call the Utah Senate at (801) 538-1035.
Thank you for standing for the family and parental rights!
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
