Maryland--Calls Needed to Stop Bill to Remove 'Marriage' from Maryland Law
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Calls are needed immediately to stop a bill that goes far beyond creating "domestic partnerships" but actually removes all references to marriage in Maryland law. This radical bill seeks to utterly eliminate God-ordained marriage as it has been understood and cherished for thousands of years and replace it with a man-made creation, "domestic partnerships." Senate Bill 689 is a frontal assault on a foundation of our society. The hearing on the bill is scheduled for Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. Please call before then. ACTION REQUESTED Please call your senator if he or she is listed below. Use our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find out who your senator is. Your message can be as simple as "Please vote against S.B. 689. Marriage deserves protection, not elimination."

This affects all families, so it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. BACKGROUND Our freedom to homeschool rests in part on the sanctity of marriage. An attack on marriage is, in effect, an attack on your freedom to homeschool. With marriage abolished or weakened, we will have fewer tools with which to defend the freedom to homeschool next time we appear in court to defend families. Marriage was created by God, not men. Marriage is a union of a man and a woman. The two shall become one. "Partnership" implies two or more people simply agreeing to terms of a contract, breakable at will. Homosexual advocates have aggressively pushed to redefine marriage so two people of the same gender can be considered "married." Many states have responded by passing constitutional amendments protecting traditional marriage. Maryland, unfortunately has been heading the other direction. This bill is the epitome of social engineering--it does not simply create a new status, domestic partner, but it abolishes completely marriage as a legal state. A majority of Maryland citizens, I believe, want to cherish and protect marriage and the blessing it has been to our culture. To ensure the continuation of marriage as a blessed, unique, protected, and enduring part of the bedrock of our culture, the people of Maryland must make their voices heard over the shrill voices of the social engineers. Thank you for standing with us for freedom. Sincerely Yours,
Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney
