New Mexico: Defeat of Domestic Partnership Bill
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Thank you for your perseverance! The many calls the committee received made a difference.
H.B. 9, the domestic partnership bill was finally defeated when Senator Richard C. Martinez changed his position to vote with the five other senators opposing the bill. As a result, H.B. 9 was tabled (which kills it for the year) in the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 6-4 vote.
This was a long, hard fight, but righteousness won in the end. This is the second year in a row that the bill was defeated when all expectation were that it would pass.
We especially are thankful to CAPE-NM for their hard work to defeat this bill. We urge any of you who are not members to join CAPE-NM to support their efforts for New Mexico homeschoolers. You can visit their website at http://www.cape-nm.org/.
We also thank all of you who attended the CAPE-NM capitol day this past week. Over 350 homeschoolers attended the event and expressed their opposition to H.B. 9 while promoting the cause of homeschooling with the legislature. Annual days at the capitol are a tremendous way to remind the legislatures that the homeschoolers are "alive and well" and that they care about freedom.
Thank you again for your involvement in protecting liberty in New Mexico.
Sincerely,
Christopher J. Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel
---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind?
An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
