HSLDA--Your Calls Needed to Support Homeschool Legislation
Dear Utah HSLDA Members and Friends:
Senator Mark Madsen, a supporter of homeschool freedom in Utah, has introduced Senate Bill 37, which is now before the whole Senate after receiving a favorable report from the Education Committee.
The bill would require school districts to respond to homeschoolers within 30 days of receiving a homeschool affidavit. Because current law does not specify a deadline, school districts sometimes wait a long time to issue exemption certificates. Senate Bill 37 changes this.
The legislation also mandates that homeschoolers have equal access to public school sports programs and gives the student's instructor (for homeschoolers, this would be the parent) the authority to certify academic eligibility to participate.
HSLDA takes a neutral position on the sports access provision, but supports passage of the bill without amendment.
ACTION: Please email or call your Utah state senator and ask him or her to pass Senate Bill 37 without amendment.
To find your senator, you can use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . You can also call the Utah Senate at (801) 538-1035.
Thank you for helping preserve homeschool freedom in Utah!
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly HSLDA Staff Attorney

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
