Massachusetts--Change in Compulsory School Attendance Age Stopped for This Year
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Last year, Massachusetts lawmakers introduced eight different bills to raise the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18 years. This year, Senate Bill 2462 replaces all of those bills. The new legislation establishes policies and programs to improve dropout prevention and graduation rates in Massachusetts, and creates a commission to study raising the compulsory school attendance age. Legislation that is put into "studies" is rarely resurrected and passed into law.
This is good news for homeschoolers, as it means that you will not have extra reporting to do this year! Your calls and emails last May were important and demonstrate to legislators that Massachusetts parents do not want the government to exercise more control over their children.
Thank you for your support as we work to preserve homeschooling freedom in Massachusetts and throughout the world.
Very truly yours,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
