====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 4, 2008 Florida: The Florida Marriage Amendment Will Be On the 2008 Ballot! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Good news! The Florida Marriage Amendment was officially certified for the November 4, 2008 ballot. The Florida Division of Elections officially counted 649,346 petitions. Thanks to your hard work, we were able to make up for the shortfall of 22,000 petitions. This amendment defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This will prohibit both same-sex marriage and polygamy. The effort to certify the marriage amendment for the ballot has been a long and hard one. Matt Staver of Liberty Counsel successfully defeated a challenge of the marriage amendment language before the state Supreme Court in January 2006. Just a few weeks ago, the Florida Division of Elections threw out 22,000 petitions that had been collected so that the number of petitions was insufficient. Nonetheless, you and a coalition of family groups throughout the state were able to work together and collect more than enough signatures for the Florida Marriage Amendment be on the ballot on November 4. Now your last effort is to urge your friends and neighbors to vote on Election Day for the marriage amendment. Florida law requires that the ballot passed by us at least 60% of the vote. Thank you once again for taking time to make a difference! Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
