====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Gloucester County Sends Unauthorized 'Survey' Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Gloucester County Public Schools recently sent an unauthorized "survey" to homeschool parents. The survey asked for information to which the school system is not entitled under law, including your reasons for homeschooling, whether you are considering putting your children back in public school, etc. The cover letter accompanying the survey gushed about how interested the public school system is in the success of each child, but it's really all about money. They are trying to set up a public school at home program (also known as a "virtual school"). Every homeschooler who signs up for their public-school-at-home program would bring more tax dollars to the school system. And the children would become public school students. Since membership in HSLDA is only for homeschoolers, families whose children are enrolled in Gloucester's online program would not be eligible for membership in HSLDA. Data from Idaho and Kansas indicate that children in public-school-at-home programs score lower than children in conventional public schools. Do not let allow the hype from the school system make you believe their program is good for kids. Freedom works best. When parents remain fully responsible for their children's education, they excel. The average homeschool 8th-grader scores the same on standardized tests as the average public school 12th-grader, according to research by Dr. Lawrence Rudner of the University of Maryland. Gloucester may offer you free books, free online programs, free access to public school teachers, etc. But these "freebies" come with a high price: loss of your ability to control your child's education. Since Gloucester's survey seeks information not authorized by law, and since it's really just advertising for their new money-making strategy, we recommend that you simply ignore it. Sincerely Yours.... Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's National Center for Home Education is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
