Indiana: Calls Needed to Support Marriage Amendment in House
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Senate Joint Resolution 7, the traditional marriage amendment, has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and is on the Senate floor waiting for a vote! We are excited about this opportunity for it to be passed and are thankful for your response to past emails.
However, there is a need for the marriage amendment to gain a foothold in the House. We are asking you to contact the House Committee members in order to get the marriage amendment passed this year and presented to Indiana voters for the 2008 election.
House Joint Resolution 8 is the companion resolution to S.J.R. 7 and would amend the Indiana state Constitution to state that marriage is between one man and one woman.
H.J.R. 8 is currently in the House Committee on Rules and Legislative Procedures. Please call and email the committee members listed below and urge them to support House Joint Resolution 8.
Action Requested:
Please contact the Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee members listed below and give this message in your own words:
"Please vote in favor of House Joint Resolution 8. Give citizens on Indiana an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage."
You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. If your last name begins with A-M please contact the first five committee members. If you last name begins with N-Z please contact the last five committee members.

For Democrats call: (800) 382-9842 Chairman- Representative Scott Pelath Email: h9@in.gov Vice Chair- Representative Russ Stilwell Email: h74@in.gov Representative Terri Austin Email: h36@in.gov Representative Earl Harris Email: h2@in.gov Representative Dennie Oxley Email: h73@in.gov Representative Trent VanHaaften Email: h76@in.gov
For Republicans call: (800) 382-9841 Representative Randy Borror Email: h84@IN.gov Representative Ralph Foley Email: h47@in.gov Representative Jerry Torr Email: h39@IN.gov Representative P. Eric Turner (Co-sponsor of resolution) Email: h32@IN.gov
Background:
Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool.
Amending the Indiana Constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone.
The proposed Indiana Constitution amendment states: "(a) Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. (b) This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."
Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney
