Virginia--Calls Needed Now To Increase Assessment Options
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Thank you for your calls! H.B. 1183, which would give homeschoolers
three new ways to satisfy the year-end assessment requirement, passed
subcommittee last night nearly unanimously with bipartisan support. I
testified and explained why the bill was necessary. Representatives
of Home Educators of Virginia and Organization of Virginia
Homeschoolers testified in favor of the bill also. No one testified
against the bill.
The full committee, the House Education Committee, will conduct a
hearing on the bill tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.. Your calls are
urgently needed to help the bill receive a favorable committee
recommendation and move forward toward enactment. I plan to be there
to testify.
ACTION REQUESTED

out if your delegate is listed below, and then call and ask them to
support H.B. 1183. Your message can be as simple as:
"Please support H.B. 1183. It will help children who can best show
their progress some way other than a standardized test, reduce
conflicts because of conflicting local decisions, and give families
more options for year-end assessments."

BACKGROUND
Last year we saw a dramatic surge in unreasonable rejections of
perfectly good assessments. Assessments with basically identical
essential content that had been accepted previously were being
rejected. New demands were being made. There was tremendous
uncertainty because superintendents kept changing the rules.
Unfortunately, Virginia law currently gives only one clear option: a
standardized test. Anything else a family submits can be rejected at
the whim of the superintendent. Many other states give families
several clear choices, providing much-needed flexibility.
