====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 28, 2008 New Mexico--Calls Needed, Domestic Partnerships Bill on the Move Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, House Bill 9, the bill which will allow same-sex couples to have the same rights as married couples, was passed by the House on a 33-31 vote. It is now in the Senate and ready to be heard by two Senate Committees. H.B. 9 has been referred to the Senate Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) and then to the Senate Judiciary Committee (SJC). It is anticipated that H.B. 9 will be heard in SPAC on Tuesday afternoon, January 29, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. in Room 321. If H.B. 9 passes in SPAC, it will probably be heard in SJC on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 or Friday, February 1, 2008. We are working together with CAPE of New Mexico to defeat this bill, and we join them in asking you to begin the fight to defeat this in the Senate. ACTION REQUESTED Call each of the senators on SPAC today and, in your own words, give them this message: "Please vote 'no' on H.B. 9. This bill elevates same-sex persons to that of married men and women. The rights and benefits can be obtained through private agreement and the state does not need to endorse such an agreement."
