====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 28, 2008 Indiana: Calls Needed--Marriage Amendment Voted out of Committee Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: As many of you may know, there is a traditional marriage amendment that has been introduced in Indiana. Senate Joint Resolution (S.J.R.) 7 would amend the Indiana state Constitution to state that marriage is between one man and one woman. On Thursday, January 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to pass S.J.R. 7 out of committee by a vote of 5 to 4. S.J.R. 7 will now go to the full Senate. The proposed amendment states: "(a) Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman. (b) This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups." Action Requested: Please call your state senator and give him or her this message: "Please vote in favor of Senate Joint Resolution 7. Give citizens in Indiana an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. If your senator has sponsored S.J.R. 7, please thank them for their support. See list below. You can call the Indiana Senate hotline toll-free at (800) 382-9467 or (317) 232-9400. The following Senators have sponsored SJR 7: Senator Boots, Senator Bray, Senator Hershman, Senator Charbonneau, Senator Delph, Senator Dillon, M.D., Senator Drozda, Senator Jackman, DVM, Senator Kruse, Senator Nugent, Senator Waterman, Senator Weatherwax, Senator Young. Background: Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the Indiana Constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone. Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
