====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Come to 'Day at the Capitol' February 7, 2008 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Home Educators Association of Virginia is sponsoring a "Day at the Capitol" for Virginia homeschool families on Thursday, February 7, 2008. This great event will help draw families to Richmond to make vital face-to-face contact with their lawmakers. We at the Home School Legal Defense Association believe it is very important for as many homeschool families to attend as possible. Nearly every year there is harmful legislation to fight or pro-homeschool freedom bills to pass. In our 25 years at HSLDA, we have seen how effective capitol days are in preventing bad legislation or enacting good law. If legislators from either party never meet a homeschooler, they will often vote against homeschooling when given the opportunity. However, if they meet a good homeschool family face-to-face, it opens their eyes to the hardship they would cause if they vote to restrict homeschooling. This will be an opportunity for homeschooling families from across the state to meet with state officials and learn how to effectively lobby for greater homeschool freedom in Virginia. In addition, "Day at the Capitol" is a great field trip opportunity for your children to learn about our government and how laws are made. Families who sign up will be able to take their pick of a variety of fun and educational activities, from joining in the "Mock General Assembly," participating in a scavenger hunt, observing the General Assembly, greeting your legislators, visiting the Museum of the Confederacy, or taking special homeschool tours of the Capitol, the Executive Mansion, the Virginia Supreme Court, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals! Visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4629 for an all-day schedule of events, and to find out what exciting speakers are expected earlier on in the day. The cost is only $20 per family and $5 for any additional non-family child. Due to limited seating, advance reservations and payment are required by calling HEAV at 804-278-9200.This HEAV-sponsored event is open to ALL homeschoolers! Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's National Center for Home Education is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
