Germany--Please Help the Landahl Family
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
As you may know, homeschooling families throughout Germany are facing severe persecution, including fines, frozen assets, and having custody of their children taken away. In an attempt to remain in their homeland, many families are embroiled in court battles, but an increasing number of them are choosing to flee rather than risk losing their children to the authorities.
One of these families is Klaus and Kathrin Landahl of Altensteig, Germany, who have five children under the age of 13. Altensteig's mayor has filed an action in the local family court to take custody away from the Landahls, which can be done without even allowing the parents a hearing. The Landahls fled to England before the court could act to remove their children from their home. (For a complete account, please see http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59596.)
Those of you in Montana have a unique opportunity to make a difference in this horrible situation. The city of Butte has a sister relationship with Altensteig, Germany, and we are asking you to contact its government to help the Landahls and other Altensteig homeschoolers.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please contact Chief Executive Officer Paul Babb and the 12-member Council of Commissioners (see contact information below), and, in your own words, give them the following message:
"Home education is a freedom that we in the United States, and particularly in Montana, enjoy, and it has benefited our family in many ways [if you wish, elaborate here]. Unfortunately, our sister town of Altensteig, Germany (like the rest of Germany), does not recognize the right of parents to choose their children's method of education, and Mayor Jurgen Grossmann is right now petitioning the court to take child custody from two parents that simply want to educate their children at home. I am asking you to please write Mayor Grossmann, and ask him to 1) withdraw the court action against Klaus and Kathrin Landahl, and 2) support home education in Altensteig."
