====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== December 17, 2007 HSLDA--Florida Marriage Protection Amendment Certified for 2008 Ballot Dear Florida Members, In November, Florida voters will have the opportunity to approve an amendment to guarantee that marriage in that state remains between one man and one woman. Thanks to your participation, the Florida Coalition to Protect Marriage was able to help collect more than the required 611,009 certified signatures needed for the amendment to be placed on the November 2008 ballot. The number of signatures is more than any gathered thus far for marriage amendments in other states. The Florida Marriage Protection Amendment states: "Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized." In January 2006, attorney Mat Staver of the Liberty Council presented oral arguments in defense of the amendment's language. And on March 23, 2006, the Florida Supreme Court in a 7-0 opinion rejected the ACLU's challenge to the marriage amendment! Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. Amending the Florida constitution will protect the concept of marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with the citizens will one day redefine marriage for us and allow same sex marriages. Thanks to all of you who took the time to sign the petition and successfully get the marriage amendment on the November 2008 ballot! May God bless you for your commitment to the protection of marriage in Florida. Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists?
