====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== December 17, 2007 To: All Home School Families in Loudoun County and surrounding areas From: Dr. Steven McCollum, Director of Music, Patrick Henry College, Executive Director, PHC-YMA Re: Patrick Henry College-Youth Music Academy (PHC-YMA) Greetings! This letter is to announce the launching of the Patrick Henry College Youth Music Academy. Our Purpose: This new organization's purpose is to provide an opportunity for homeschool students at the 8th -12th grade levels to participate in quality musical performance ensembles. These grade levels were chosen because they seem to have few opportunities to play and sing in musical ensembles in this region. More often than not, churches in northern Virginia have youth choirs for children in the primary grades only. As such, we are beginning this enterprise with two ensembles; an instrumental ensemble, open to all instruments represented in the orchestra, and a mixed choir including voices in the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass ranges. These ensembles will rehearse once each week for two hours on the Patrick Henry College campus. Our desired outcomes for these students are to see them develop musicianship and poise while learning the skills necessary for sound, artistic performance. Our Faculty: We have hired two very fine musicians who reside in northern Virginia to be our musical leaders. Our choral director is Rod Appleton. Rod is a graduate of California State University at Fullerton where he earned a masters degree in choral conducting. He has served as Director of Music at several large churches on the west coast, including the First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton. Rod currently directs the choir at Purcellville Baptist Church in Purcellville, VA. The director of our instrumental ensemble is Tom Gossage. Tom is an instrumental specialist. He personally plays 7-8 different instruments and keeps an active teaching studio which represents a variety of these instruments. Tom has also served as a church musician for the past 15 years and currently serves as the Director of Music and Worship at Blue Ridge Bible Church in Purcellville, VA. These men are dedicated to their craft and we are excited that they are offering their talents to the region in this way. Auditions To schedule an audition, please e-mail or call Dr. Steven McCollum using the contact information below and online at www.hslda.org/phc/. Please include all of your contact information and specify in which ensemble you (or your son or daughter) wish to participate. After your message has been received, Dr. McCollum will forward it to the appropriate director who will send a follow up message including an audition time on Saturday, January 12, 2008, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Patrick Henry College campus. The return message will also contain any needed instructions for the audition. Please note that these auditions are not meant to intimidate students in any way. They are a tool which allows the directors to accurately assess the skills of potential participants. Rehearsals Weekly rehearsals will be 12:30-2:30 p.m., in Town Hall, on the Patrick Henry College campus. The instrumental ensemble will meet on Wednesday and the chorus will meet on Thursday. Please note that PHC has a "business casual" dress code for all students during business hours each week. PHC-YMA participants will be asked to abide by this simple dress code. Simply put, the dress code asks that students do not wear jeans, tee-shirts, or tennis shoes during business hours. Decorum Patrick Henry College is a faith-based institution and has established clear mission and world-view statements which all full-time and adjunct faculty embrace. While participants in the PHC-YMA will not be asked to sign any statements of faith or world-view, we do ask that all participants become acquainted with the views of the college and behave in a way that demonstrates respect for these views. To review these documents, go the PHC website: www.phc.edu. Tuition A tuition fee will be charged for each student participating in the PHC-YMA. The fee for the 2008 spring season is $160. Payment of tuition is due, in full, on or before Monday, January 28, 2008. Please make checks payable to Patrick Henry College. Pro-rated fees will apply to families with more than one student in the same ensemble. The fee for the 2nd participant will be one-half the full tuition, 3rd participant will be one-fourth the full tuition. Families with more than three participants will be considered on a case by case basis. Contact Information Please send all audition requests, questions, and comments to the contact information below. Thank you for your interest in this new musical enterprise. We are excited about the talent and musical potential represented in this region's home school students. Won't you consider adding your skills to the group of students and parents who have already expressed their interest in participating? We are already looking forward to seeing you at the auditions on January 12!
