====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Kansas--Community College To Correct Erroneous Admissions-Financial Aid Info Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Many HSLDA members have contacted us after receiving a letter dated November 6, 2007, from Johnson County Community College, suggesting that a student could not get financial aid with a parent-issued high school diploma unless they also had either a GED or a satisfactory score on the Compass test. The director of student financial aid is in the process of distributing a letter to correct this erroneous statement. I have read the correction letter and spoken at length with the director. With the clarification I received during our conversation, the letter of correction can be summarized as follows: 1. A degree-seeking student seeking admission must have a high school diploma, or a GED, or 24 hours of college credit with a C average or better to be admitted. Applicants will not routinely be asked to present a copy of their diploma, but if requested, they must provide a copy. A diploma signed by a parent following the completion of high school through a home-based program will be treated the same as a diploma issued by an accredited school. 2. No one will be required to take a Compass test or any other test for the purpose of financial aid (there may be exceptions in unusual cases.) 3. All degree-seeking students will be required to take the Compass test solely for purposes of determining which classes the student may be placed in. If a student has earned a 19 or better on the ACT test, however, they will not need to take the Compass test. This policy is sensible and workable and I believe shows that Johnson County Community College is eager to keep its doors open to homeschool graduates. Sincerely, Scott A. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
