His legacy as a military genius is widely renowned. Now, his legacy
as a man of resolute Christian character is captured in this revealing

1. Washington Times Op-ed--Success Proving Critics Wrong

When you hear stories of high academic achievement by homeschoolers,
it's routine for opponents to try to minimize the results by asserting
that not all homeschoolers are required to test over the same testing
instruments.

2. Germany: Prosecutor Wants Homeschooling Parents in Jail

In the German state of Hesse, one homeschooling family is determined
to resist government oppression of home education. For their brave
stand, the family risks losing custody of their children and going to
jail.

3. Maryland: Baltimore County Offers Freebies In Exchange for Freedom

Homeschoolers in Baltimore County should be wary of the local school
district's "virtual instruction" program. Public school at home
programs such as this one offer free resources, but then restrict the
freedom of parents to direct their children's education.

4. Florida: School District Sends Social Worker to Collect Evaluation

Public school officials' confusion concerning year-end evaluations
turned into an excuse for sending a social worker to the house of a
homeschooling family.

5. Wisconsin: Social Worker Refuses to Leave Homeschool Family Alone

A member family contacted us when a social worker accused them of
having a filthy home with no running water.

6. Colorado: After Social Worker Closes Case, Family 'Spreads the
Word!'

We helped a homeschooling family prove child abuse allegations against
them were false, and they in turn told their friends "about the
importance of joining and supporting HSLDA."

7. Essay Contest Entries now Being Accepted

The 2007 Home School Legal Defense Association Essay Contest is now
accepting entries. The deadline is November 1, so get those pencils
flying!

Depending on their age, homeschool students' essays must expound upon
the following:
> Category 1 (ages 7-11): If there was one person in the world you
could help, who would it be, why would you help them, and how would
you help them?
> Category 2 (ages 12-15): If you could choose to make a small
difference in the world at large or a big difference in one person's
life, which would you choose and why?
> Category 3 (ages 16-19): Describe an admirable quality or admirable
position of a person with whom you largely disagree.

8. Special Needs Snippet: Think Long Term

The Lord Jesus Christ allowed Simon Peter to fail (when he denied
knowing Him), because He foresaw Peter's greater usefulness after he
had learned from that failure. Compare that particular strategy of our
Lord to the method of a "Rescue 911" parent who will not, in specific
instances, permit a child to fail and have the opportunity to grow and
develop as a result of those "failures." The book of Proverbs speaks
to this subject, and James 1:5-8 promises that wisdom from the Lord is
available for the asking.

9. 'Home School Heartbeat': Raising Teenage Boys

What is your vision for your teenage boy? How can homeschool parents
raise their teenage boys to be responsible young men? This week,
Michael Farris discusses this topic with four young men from Patrick
Henry College.
