====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== September 24, 2007 New Hampshire--Department of Education Clears Up Compulsory Attendance Confusion in Response to Your Calls Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your calls and emails regarding the confusion over the new compulsory school attendance age made a difference! The New Hampshire Department of Education has issued a memorandum to all of the state's public school superintendents and principals notifying them that July 1, 2009, will be the effective date for the new compulsory attendance law. (You can read the memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4427 .) The memorandum instructs school districts to continue operating as they have, allowing students 16 years and older to terminate school attendance. This means that if your homeschooled child is 16 years of age or older, you do not need to file a notice of intent with a participating agency for the 2007-2008 or the 2008-2009 school years, and you will not be at risk for truancy charges for not filing. After July 1, 2009, you must file a notice of intent for any child under 18 who has not completed high school. Though we were disappointed in the compulsory attendance age increase, the good news is that it will not become effective for another 18 months. Thank you for letting Governor John Lynch and your legislators know how important it is to protect families who really are following the law. Sincerely, Michael P.
