Washington Times Op-ed--Education Extends to 12th Grade This back-to-school time of year is different for homeschoolers because most homeschoolers do not follow the traditional school schedule, nor are their children sent "back to school." For parents educating their own children all the way through high school, it's even more true, because one of the hallmarks of homeschooling teens is the flexible schedule. But is homeschooling through high school desirable? Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4384 ..................................................................... 2. HSLDA Co-hosts Joint Briefing on NCLB in Washington, D.C. To help keep a major piece of federal legislation from encroaching on homeschoolers, Home School Legal Defense Association took part in a Washington briefing for congressional staffers and others. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4385 ..................................................................... 3. Illinois: Registration is Not Required as Some School Districts Assert In response to several misleading newspaper articles, HSLDA is helping to set the record straight: Homeschoolers in Illinois are not required to register their children. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4386 ..................................................................... 4. Maryland: When Bureaucrats Hate to Give Up Control Public school officials in Pennsylvania insisted that a member family provide information about their homeschool despite the fact they had moved to Maryland. We helped the family resist the unfounded demands. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4387 ..................................................................... 5. Florida: Prosecutor Persuaded to Dismiss Truancy Case A prosecutor charged a homeschooling family with truancy even though their teen was no longer subject to school attendance laws. We helped officials recognize their mistake. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4388 ..................................................................... 6. Special Needs Snippet: Assigning vs. Teaching The rule is to teach first and afterwards assign. In math, for instance, you explain how to work an example. Next, you work one example for the child. After that, you allow the child to work one example while you observe whether he has really understood or needs further instruction. Finally, you allow the child to work on his own. You are aiming for his success. So, an assignment should provide the child the opportunity to demonstrate his understanding. At the same time, his performance may give you the opportunity to assess how well you have taught. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4389 ..................................................................... 7. HSLDA Makes Changes for Next Contest Season This year, HSLDA is announcing all four student contests at once. Although submissions for each contest will only be accepted during the dates specified on our website, students can now spend more time working on their entries. The first is the essay contest, with submission deadlines of October 1 through November 1, 2007. Students can start working on their essays right away! Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4390 ..................................................................... 8. Deadline Extended for Constitutional Law Course If you've always wanted to learn more about the history and background of our legal system, from a biblical perspective, or if you're looking for a good U.S. government class for your homeschooled students, there's still time to sign up for the current Constitutional Law course taught by Michael Farris. The class began September 10, 2007, but the registration deadline has been extended until September 17. To learn more and to register: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4290 ..................................................................... 9.
