====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Iowa--Reminder: CPI Form Filing Deadline September 15 Dear HSLDA Members: This is just a quick reminder that your Competent Private Instruction (CPI) form, which should be accompanied by HSLDA's "Privacy Notification Form," is due by September 15. If a public school has previously identified a child as having special needs, the CPI form should be filed earlier, if practicable. If your child turns 16, or is not yet 6, as of Sept. 15, you need not file a CPI form. In previous years, the form was due "by the first day of school"--an ever-shifting target. The Department of Education eliminated the guesswork this year by specifying September 15 as the due date in the current CPI form and the CPI Handbook. A few officials have given families CPI forms that local school districts have modified. This should be viewed with caution. A district that thinks it has the authority to modify the CPI form (and they really don't!) may include unauthorized demands. If a school district offers you a modified CPI form, please send us a copy, so we can review it. In order to protect the privacy of information on your CPI form, include HSLDA's "Privacy Notification Form." Ideally, the privacy form and the CPI form should be mailed at the same time. We recommend that you mail them return receipt requested, and file the postal receipt when it comes. Although the privacy form could be sent later, it will not protect you from violations of your privacy before the school system receives it. Without this form, your school district may release information about your family. To get the form, go to HSLDA's homepage, point your mouse to "members," then click on "forms and other resources" from the drop-down menu. Enter your member user name and password (there are instructions on what to do if you don't have one). Click on the state of Iowa on the map, and then on the "Privacy Notification Form" link. Although use of the HSLDA form is not mandatory, other forms or methods of asserting your privacy rights may not be effective. Homeschooling at the high school level can be tremendously rewarding. However, if you're not sure you can do it, we'd like to help. Homeschool veterans Becky Cooke and Diane Kummer have joined the HSLDA staff to provide encouragement, ideas, and a helping hand to parents with questions about homeschooling at the high school level. You can contact them by calling HSLDA at (540) 338-5600 or via email at info@hslda.org. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
