Wyoming--Clarification: Curriculum, Yes, Approval, No
Dear HSLDA Members:
The following sentence in our last email may have caused some confusion: "A number of Wyoming members have contacted the Home School Legal Defense Association after receiving a letter from their local superintendent indicating that they must submit their homeschool curriculum for approval."
Homeschoolers in Wyoming are required by law to submit their curriculum to the local board of trustees showing that a basic academic educational program is provided (for more information, see http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Wyoming.pdf). However, the law does not give the board of trustees the authority to "approve" or "disapprove" that curriculum. Rather, the board's task is to ensure that a homeschooling parent has complied with the provisions of the law. If the home education program is in compliance with the law, the board must exempt the children in that program from attendance at the public school.
We hope this clears up any confusion that may have arisen as a result of our last email. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
