Washington Times Op-ed--Honoring Moore's Achievements The homeschool community owes a great debt of gratitude to Raymond S. Moore, who died July 13 at age 91. Mr. Moore was instrumental in developing the modern homeschool movement. Without his early involvement, it's likely that homeschooling would not be as popular as it is today. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4335 ..................................................................... 2. President's View: The Best Kind of Socialization Many homeschoolers have specifically chosen homeschooling because their view is that school and the typical peer groups found there are not forces of positive socialization. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4336 ..................................................................... 3. Missouri: Case of Poison Oak Gets Exaggerated by Tipster When social workers accused a member family of neglecting their children's health, Home School Legal Defense Association intervened. Special Needs Snippet: One Way to Avoid Burnout You want to get off to a really good start this school year. You plan to hammer away at teaching those yet-unconquered math facts and those still-unrecognizable words which occur so frequently in reading. Those are noble goals, but don't wear out yourself and your child by devoting all your time to remediating his or her deficiencies. Spend part of the school day majoring on your child's strengths and interests. Proverbs 22:6 (according to the Hebrew) gives justification for doing that: "Train up a child in his way that he should go (the way that God has gifted him). . . ." Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4341 ..................................................................... 8. Homeschooling Thru High School: Recognition and Encouragement for Writers Are your children gifted writers? If so, you may want to explore helping them submit their works for publication. On the Homeschooling Thru High School website resource section, we list a variety of magazines for you to consider. Also, HSLDA holds an essay contest each year. For more information, call us at (540) 338-5600 or email highschool@hslda.org. Read more about it at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4342 ..................................................................... 9. Learn Constitutional Law Online with Michael Farris If you've always wanted to learn more about the history and background of our legal system, from a biblical perspective, or if you're looking for a good U.S. government class for your homeschooled students, then sign up for the next Constitutional Law course taught by Michael Farris. The class begins September 10, 2007, and concludes February 25, 2008. This 18-week Internet-based course follows Farris' textbook, "Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens," and uses an MP3 CD to deliver the "classroom" lectures. 'Home School Heartbeat': Explaining Teen Behavior The adolescent years can be a time of development rather than conflict--who knew? According to Dr. Robert Epstein's research, he says parents can encourage young people to be mature by treating them like adults. To hear more, listen to this week's "Home School Heartbeat" with HSLDA President Mike Smith.
