====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== July 24, 2007 Michigan: Calls Needed Stop Resolution to Expand Government Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in Michigan, The Michigan legislature is considering H.R. 81, a non-binding resolution to encourage the U.S. Congress to enact the "Education Begins at Home Act." Although the title of this Act sounds good, it is actually a move to inject more government control into the role of parenting. The "Education Begins at Home Act" expands programs of early childhood home visitation, child abuse and neglect prevention, and early identification of developmental and health delays, including potential mental health concerns, and for other purposes. Many of these provisions would increase the federal government's role in these programs as well as increase government funding to these programs. This bill further usurps parental authority, with an estimated expense of $500 million of your tax dollars. Another program where the government enters your home to tell you how to raise your children is not the solution to child abuse. H.R. 81 could be voted on at any time, and we need your calls to stop it! REQUESTED ACTION: Please call or email your state representative now and give this message: "Please oppose House Resolution 81. This resolution would only encourage the federal government to get involved in an area in which it does not belong." You can find information on your representative by using our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4281 . It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
