====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== July 24, 2007 Virginia: Year-end Assessment, Notice of Intent Deadlines Approaching Dear Virginia HSLDA Members, Here are some important dates to remember for families who are homeschooling under the Virginia home instruction statute. 1. Your year-end assessment is due to your local superintendent by August 1. You do not need to file an assessment if your child was not yet 6 years old as of September 30. No assessment needs to be filed if the child turns 18 on or before August 1. A number of school systems have recently demanded remediation because student subtest scores were below the 23rd percentile. This is incorrect. The subtest or individual subject test scores do not matter--only the composite score. 2. Your notice of intent is due to your local superintendent by August 15. Although it is not necessary to use any form at all, we have posted a form on the members-only section of our website (available at http://members.hslda.org/state/VA/default.asp) for those who want to be certain they are supplying all that is required, but no more than is required. Forms created by local school systems almost always ask for information to which they are not entitled. If a child will turn 18 before the first day of school in your district, a notice does not need to be filed. 3. Families under the religious exemption do not need to file a year-end assessment or notice of intent. Call HSLDA's Peter LaRock at (540) 338-5600 to receive a packet of helpful information or answers to other questions if you plan on contacting your school system about the religious exemption. 4. If a parent is a Virginia certified teacher, and their credentials have been approved by the local superintendent for tutoring, no notice or assessment needs to be filed with respect to children taught under that teacher. However, if a parent with a teacher certificate filed a notice of intent, the school system will expect a year-end assessment unless you can switch to the certified tutor option before August 1. Sincerely Yours, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind? An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
