====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== July 5, 2007 Alaska--Legislative Wrap-Up Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The Alaska Legislature adjourned for the year on May 16, 2007. HSLDA tracked several bills during the 2007 session that, if passed, could have affected the rights of parents who educate their children at home. None of them became law. Most notable was Senate Bill 14, a bill which would have raised the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18. It would also have raised from 16 to 18 the age of a person restricted to a combined total of nine hours of school and employment in one day. House Bill 52 was a driver's license bill which would have required a person under 18 to have graduated from high school or be enrolled in school or an educational program in order to get a driver's license. It is uncertain whether students in a home education program would have qualified for a license. House Joint Resolution 9 and Senate Joint Resolution 9 were both introduced to propose an amendment to the Alaska Constitution which would prohibit the recognition of any union except marriage between a man and woman. Neither of these measures was successful. We are grateful for your vigilance and involvement to support parental rights in Alaska and keep your ability to homeschool your children free from unreasonable governmental interference.
