North Carolina: Public School Official Labels Homeschool Illegal On behalf of a new member family, Home School Legal Defense Association resolved a difficulty involving a public school official's unauthorized request for additional documentation concerning the family's plans to homeschool. Alabama: State Compels Unauthorized Reporting The top state education official recently issued a memorandum stating that church schools--through which many Alabama families homeschool--must complete the 2007-2008 Annual Report of Non-Public Schools form. Georgia: Superintendent Tries to Set Family's School Year In response to a family's request for assistance, HSLDA reminded public school officials that state law says homeschoolers--not district superintendents--determine the school year for their home study program. Illinois: Wheaton School District 'Checks Up' on Homeschool Family A member family immediately contacted us when they received a letter from public school officials demanding a portfolio, test scores, and other information. We informed school officials that their demands were outside the law.
