Minnesota--Legislative Wrap-Up
Dear HSLDA members and friends,
The Minnesota Legislature has adjourned for the year. Throughout the Legislature's 2007 session, Home School Legal Defense Association and the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MACHE) tracked 41 bills, of which only three passed both the House and the Senate. Two of those bills--both omnibus bills--were vetoed by Governor Tim Pawlenty.
A third omnibus bill, House File 2245, was signed by Governor Pawlenty on May 30, 2007. During the last hours of the 2007 legislative session, this bill was amended. The language added allows the Commissioner of Education to make rules specifying how the graduation-required assessment for diploma (GRAD) applies to homeschooled students. HSLDA Attorney Mike Donnelly and MACHE's John Tuma are working the Minnesota Commissioner of Education to ensure that this new rulemaking authority does not adversely affect homeschoolers. We will keep you updated on this issue as necessary.
Overall, this was a good legislative session. If you have questions regarding a particular homeschooling legislative issue, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney
