====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== June 15, 2007 Oregon: Update on Compulsory Attendance Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: Thanks to your calls and prayers, Senate Bill 392 was voted down on Monday by a vote of 32 to 23. However, Representative Arnie Roblan from the 9th District changed his vote from yes to no and requested a reconsideration of the bill. This is a tactic used to try to save a bill from defeat. On Wednesday the House voted 32 to 26 to reconsider Senate Bill 392 and sent the bill to the Committee on Elections, Ethics and Rules. The Committee could try to amend the bill and bring it to the floor again. At this time we are not requesting any action from you. However, HSLDA, OCEANetwork, and OHEN are closely monitoring the bill along with several other key individuals. Should any action be needed we will contact you immediately. While the Oregon Legislature has no set ending date, the average general session lasts approximately six months. The session began this year on January 8. Thank you for your diligent effort this year in fighting this bill. Please continue to pray that this victory would be a lasting one and that this bill would not be able to be saved. Senate Bill 392 is more of a parental rights battle to determine when a child should go to school than solely a homeschool issue. If you are not yet a member of HSLDA and would like to help us fight for greater parental rights and homeschool freedom in Oregon please visit http://www.hslda.org/join/apply.asp . Thank you for your part in fighting for freedom in Oregon. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." Sincerely, Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Can you look at the clouds and tell the direction of the wind? An interesting phenomenon of wind is that it can blow in multiple directions at the same time, at different heights from the ground. But usually there is a prevailing wind. HSLDA watches the gusts and monitors the prevailing trends of change in the legal climate of home education. So no matter which way the wind is blowing, we're there to protect your family.
