====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== ***** ***** ***** ***** JOINT LEGISLATIVE NEWSFLASH UPDATE - June 7, 2007 From: Roy Hanson's Private and Home Educators of California and HSLDA ***** ***** ***** ***** Bill: AB 1236 (as introduced 2/23/07) - 5 Year-Old Compulsory Education Author: State Assembly Member Gene Mullin Position: Strongly Oppose Status: Temporarily Stopped In Assembly Appropriations Committee - Until 2008 ***** ***** ***** ***** AB 1236 has been held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee at the request of the author. This is a tremendous victory for now. We praise God for His work through you to bring about this victory. We also thank you for your prayer and financial support, which enable us to work directly with the Legislature, with other groups, and to be able to issue Alerts and background papers to families across California. According to the author's office, AB 1236 has been put on hold until January 2008. If it were to pass out of the Assembly at that time, it would then have to be passed by committee and floor votes in the Senate before being sent to the Governor for his veto or signature. AB 1236 would lower the compulsory education age from 6 to 5 years of age, in effect making kindergarten mandatory. AB 1236 also would take another incremental step toward a universal preschool program for 3 and 4 year-olds. NO further action is needed on AB 1236 at this time. If and when AB 1236, or any similar bill, is brought up for consideration by the Legislature, we will issue an appropriate Action Alert requesting your involvement.
