====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== June 6, 2007 New York--Your Voice Crucial in Preserving Traditional Family! Dear HSLDA members and friends, The New York Assembly will be considering a bill in the next few days that would give same-sex couples all of the same benefits and rights reserved for married men and women. Your calls are vital to let your assemblyman know where you stand on this issue. Your calls could have a major impact on this bill over the next few days. Assembly Bill 8590 establishes same-sex marriage in New York. In fact, the bill would prohibit same-sex couples from being denied their "fundamental human right" to be married. The stated purpose of this bill is "that the marriages of same-sex and different-sex couples be treated equally in all respects under the law." Assembly Bill 8590 goes on to state that there is no "legislative intent to preserve any legal distinction between same-sex couples and different-sex couples with respect to marriage." One of the main sponsors of the bill, Daniel J. O'Donnell, stated that "This bill will provide the basic rights and protections same-sex couples and their children deserve, guaranteeing the respect and equality that should be afforded to all people under the law." Assemblyman O'Donnell is the brother of Rosie O'Donnell. Why is HSLDA opposed to this bill? Our freedom to educate our children is based upon the "western civilization concepts of the family as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children." Same-sex marriage or civil unions attack the traditions of the family in Western civilization upon which the foundation of parental choice in education and basic parental rights are based upon. Please call now to help preserve the traditional family and help defeat this legislation. While this issue may be highly polarized by those supporting this legislation, you can be the most effective advocate if you speak with conviction in a kind and loving manner. ACTION REQUESTED: 1) Please call and email your assemblyman and give him this message in your own words: "Please oppose Assembly Bill 8590. This bill is an attack on traditional marriage. It erodes the family and endangers parental rights. Marriage to whomever one wants is not a fundamental right and the state has always defined marriage as between one man and one woman." Do not identify yourself as a homeschooler, however, please let your assemblyman know that you are a constituent. Staff may ask for basic address information to confirm you are a constituent. To find the name and contact information for your assemblyman, visit HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . You can also contact your assemblyman through the legislative switch board at (517) 455-4100. 2) Please call and email the Speaker of the Assembly, Sheldon Silver, with this message in your own words: "Please oppose Assembly Bill 8590. This bill is an attack on traditional marriage. It erodes the family and endangers parental rights. Marriage to whomever one wants is not a fundamental right and the state has always defined marriage as between one man and one woman." Again, you do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Speaker of the Assembly Assemblyman Sheldon Silver Albany Phone: (518) 455-3791 District Phone: (212) 312-1420 Email Address: speaker@assembly.state.ny.us BACKGROUND How does redefining marriage as being between one man and one woman or creating civil unions in effect providing same-sex marriage potentially affect your right to homeschool your children? Here is what the Supreme Court said in 2000 in the case of Troxel v. Granville: "Our jurisprudence historically has reflected Western civilization concepts of the family (a married couple of one man and one woman) as a unit with broad parental authority over minor children. Our cases have consistently followed that course." Parental rights are based on "western civilization concepts of the family." When those concepts are no longer the legal definition of the family in this nation, then the foundation upon which parental rights are based is completely removed. HSLDA will continue to fight against same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage attacks the traditions of the family in western civilization. This is an attack on parental rights and a battle the homeschooling movement cannot afford to lose. To see the entire bill text you can go to: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A08590&sh=t . With prayer and hard work, this bill can be defeated. Please call now in support of traditional family values. Thank you for your support of traditional marriage in New York! Sincerely, Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
