Nevada: Calls Needed Now for Homeschool Freedom Bill
May 31, 2007
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Nevada Senate Bill 404, which would significantly reduce government oversight of homeschooling families, had a tough time at its Assembly Education Committee hearing on May 30, 2007. Many amendments were proposed, and some were adopted by the Committee. Unfortunately, these amendments would essentially codify existing ineffective and restrictive homeschool regulations.
During the Assembly Education Committee hearing, testimony was given by people who want these restrictions to remain intact, and the Committee amended S.B. 404 according to the dictates of this small group. The bill is now going to the Assembly floor, containing the following amendments:
-The requirement to file annually would stay intact. -The requirement to file an educational plan would stay intact, and the Committee even discussed making this an annual requirement! -The requirement that the local school district issue you a receipt after receiving your notification would stay intact (be aware that any time the district has to do something, they will want something in return).
We would like to amend S.B. 404 back to the Senate version while it is on the Assembly floor. To do this, we need you to call your Assembly Member and let them know that you are in favor of homeschool freedom! The legislature ends this Monday, June 4---if the bill does not pass the Assembly before June 4, it is dead. So it is imperative that you call your Assembly Member and encourage others to do the same.
We are working closely with the Nevada Homeschool Network to get this bill passed.
ACTION REQUESTED Please call or email your Assembly Member today through Saturday, June 2, and give him or her this message:
"Please pass S.B. 404 as amended by the Senate; this bill will protect parental rights and choice in the area of education. The amendments added by the Assembly Education Committee do not reflect what I, as a homeschool parent, believe about homeschool freedom."

It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
